Blog 4: My Future Job

Hi everyone! Today i’m going to write about a future job I would like to have. Writing about this topic is a bit hard for me and now I’m going to explain why.

I am studying in the university since 2016 (for 5 years considering this year) and in the first 3 years I interested in the musical work related to sound engineering, I mean jobs like music producer, recording engineer, mix and master engineer, but I specially interested in live sound reinforce, which refers to do sound in live activities like concerts, conferences, festivals, theater plays, etc. So, I enter to Centro Cultural Espacio Elefante (CCEE), it’s a student organization which organize live activities in “artes centro” (campus Alfonso Letelier Llona) to learn about that job from older students.

Me with some partners from CCEE, in the ending of "Sofar Santiago"

Since that I have worked in some big activities like “Santiago a 1000” and “IMESUR” thanks to what I learned in Espacio Elefante, but I don’t know if it’s my “ideal” job because in Chile Arts are devaluated, it’s really hard to have a good salary in this job, and the working hours can be exhausting (12 hours per day of work). Nevertheless, if you work with big artists its more cool because usually you travel with them when they have concerts and the working hours aren’t too long.

This pic has a great story, 1 week after "The social outbreak" in 2019, CCEE team with others sound technicians organized a concert called "Que No Nos Callen" where we worked with famous chilean artists like Princesa Alba, Pedro Piedra and Polimá Westcoast. The best artist that day was "Los Tres"  who invited "Los Jaivas" to the stage and played songs together like "Sube a nacer conmigo hermano" and "Todos juntos". https://www.instagram.com/tv/B4JRmVElspq/

Since last year I have been researching for my thesis and I interested in soundscape ecology, which is the study of sound activity in a landscape assessing biodiversity and other ecological questions, and i really loved what soundscape ecologists does, because I didn’t know that ecological research could be done through sound, but moreover the chance to travel to many natural places and spend time recording natural sounds would be incredible. I think this is the future job I would like to work in, but because it’s a new science and, at least in Chile, soundscape ecology is not a big concern, I could work only researching at the University, so i would need to study a major, maybe in landscape or biodiversity, to have a good salary and a guaranteed job in Chile.
